This past summer we rented a booth space at the 2016 Oregon State Fair to inform fairgoers about the 10 abortions funded with our state tax dollars each day. The theme of our booth was "She Deserves Better Than Abortion." On average, about 400 people stopped by daily to learn more about how we can stop taxpayer-funded abortion in Oregon.
More than 35 volunteers worked at our booth to greet people, answer questions, and give opportunities to be involved. Many others contributed financially to help make this event possible.
Real stories of joy and tears
Oregon Life United’s fair booth sparked some surprisingly open conversations. Many visitors wanted to share personal stories about their own experiences — some filled with joy, and others with tears. Here’s a small sample of what we heard:
A long time ago we made that choice [to have an abortion]. Now that I have three other boys, I think about that little one often and it makes me so sad. I tell my boys, “It hurts forever.”
How can we be paying [our tax dollars] to terminate these pregnancies when all I want is to have a baby, but I can’t?
When I met my daughter 25 years after giving her up for adoption, the first thing she said to me was “Thank you for not aborting me.”
There were many other testimonies of parents who chose life against the odds, including one woman who, when she was pregnant, was told by doctors that her child might have Down syndrome. She refused their offer of an abortion and chose life, and today has a beautiful and healthy 15-year-old daughter.
10 taxpayer-funded abortions in Oregon every day
Based on data we have obtained from the state of Oregon and the Oregon Health Authority, here are the facts:
- Over the past 12 fiscal years, the state of Oregon paid more than $20 million to organizations that perform abortions, including Planned Parenthood affiliates operating in Eugene, Portland, and Salem. That’s about $1.7 million of our tax dollars spent on abortions each year.
- All of this money was used to directly reimburse the clinics for abortions they performed during this time period — about 45,000 total. That’s about 10 taxpayer-funded abortions each day.
- Oregon is the only state in the country which places no limits or restrictions on abortion. To put it another way, Oregon is the only state in the country without any pro-life laws.
If you feel saddened or frustrated by this, you’re not alone. We invite you to join the Oregon Life United community and help pass Oregon’s first pro-life law to end taxpayer funded abortion in our state.
