We’re excited to announce that Oregon Life United is sponsoring a new 2018 ballot initiative to stop taxpayer-funded abortion in our state.
At the recent “Decision America” prayer rally hosted by Franklin Graham in Salem, Oregon Life United volunteers were able to gather nearly 2,000 sponsorship signatures in just a few hours, which we promptly delivered to the elections office, officially marking the beginning of our 2018 initiative. The next step is for the Attorney General to begin drafting a ballot title, but it’s hard to predict how long this process will take.
Pro-abortion organizations hired multiple lawyers to oppose our efforts in 2016. The Oregon Supreme Court ultimately sided with their demands for changes to our petition’s ballot title. And, because of the long delay, it unfortunately meant there was not enough time to gather signatures needed to put Oregon’s first pro-life law on the 2016 ballot.
We anticipate there will be another legal challenge this summer by Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro Choice Oregon, and right now is the perfect time to make a $25, $50, or $100 contribution to help us fight back and defend pregnant women and pre-born children from abortion.
This time we’re getting the process started much earlier so our opponents won’t be able to run out the clock as they did with our 2016 initiative. After the ballot title is finalized we’ll be able to start gathering the 117,000 signatures needed to qualify for the 2018 general election. There's a long road ahead of us, but we’ll keep you posted as we continue on our quest to pass Oregon’s first-ever pro-life law.
